Herb of the Week: Passionflower — The Quieter Mind

August 5, 2026

If you've ever lain awake at 2am, the same thought cycling through your mind on an endless loop, passionflower was made for you. This is an herb with a specific gift: quieting the mental chatter that keeps the nervous system from settling. It doesn't numb or sedate. It simply turns down the volume on the noise.

What Is Passionflower?

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing vine native to the southeastern United States. Its flowers are extraordinarily beautiful — intricate, otherworldly, almost architectural. Spanish missionaries who encountered it in the Americas named it after the Passion of Christ, seeing symbolic meaning in its structure. Indigenous peoples of North America used it long before that — for anxiety, insomnia, and pain.

What Passionflower Is Good For

  • Anxiety with mental rumination — specifically indicated for the kind of anxiety characterized by overthinking, circular thoughts, and inability to "turn off the mind"
  • Insomnia — particularly sleep-onset insomnia driven by mental activity; clinical trials show improved sleep quality
  • Generalized anxiety disorder — in one study, comparable to oxazepam (a benzodiazepine) with no impairment of job performance
  • Withdrawal support — used in addiction medicine to ease withdrawal symptoms from opiates and alcohol
  • High blood pressure — mild antihypertensive effect, partly through nervous system relaxation

How to Use It

Tincture: The most effective form. 30–60 drops in water 30–60 minutes before bed, or as needed for anxiety during the day.

Tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried herb for 10 minutes. Pleasant tasting, slightly earthy.

Capsule: Convenient for daily use.

Combined with valerian and lemon balm: A classic herbal sleep formula — each herb addresses a different aspect of sleeplessness.

A Spiritual Note

The mind that won't stop is often a mind that doesn't trust. Doesn't trust that things will be okay without its constant vigilance. Passionflower doesn't argue with the mind — it just gently reminds the nervous system that it's safe to rest. That the world will continue without your constant monitoring of it. That you are allowed to put it down, just for tonight. That's not just herbalism. That's grace.
