There's a shift that happens in early September. The light changes, mornings turn crisp, and the body starts asking for something different — warmth, grounding, resilience. This is reishi season. For over 2,000 years, this glossy, reddish-brown mushroom has been the first thing traditional practitioners reached for when the seasons turned.
What Is Reishi?
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a woody polypore mushroom that grows on hardwood trees across Asia and North America. In Chinese medicine it's called lingzhi — "spirit plant" — and was once so prized it was reserved for emperors. It's not a culinary mushroom; it's bitter and tough, and its medicine comes out through long simmering or extraction.
What Reishi Is Good For
- Immune modulation — beta-glucans and triterpenes help balance immune activity: strengthening a sluggish response, calming an overactive one
- Stress and sleep — a gentle adaptogen with a calming quality; traditionally used for restlessness and "an unquiet spirit"
- Respiratory support — long used for chronic cough, asthma, and seasonal bronchial complaints
- Liver support — studied for its protective effect on liver cells
- Longevity — antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity that earned it its reputation as a tonic for a long life
How to Use It
Decoction: Simmer sliced dried reishi in water for 1–2 hours. The tea is bitter — add cinnamon, ginger, or a little honey.
Dual-extract tincture: The most complete form, since some compounds are water-soluble and others alcohol-soluble. A dropperful daily through fall and winter.
Powder: Stir into coffee, cacao, or broth. Look for fruiting-body extracts rather than mycelium grown on grain.
Reishi is a long-game herb. Start now, before cold season, and give it 4–6 weeks.
A Spiritual Note
The Taoists didn't call reishi the spirit mushroom because it made them feel invincible. They called it that because it made them feel settled — calm enough to sit, breathe, and pay attention. As the year begins its turn inward, that might be the medicine we need most.
Reishi is available at Shop EVOKE Wellness, and our Loyalty Link partner Mush Love, Tee carries a beautiful selection of medicinal mushrooms just down the street.
